About Marmaris

Marmaris has a history dating back to 3000 B.C. The Ionians were the first to settle here captured by its beauty and the versatile position of Marmaris port to carry on trade. It was named as Physcos by the Ionians which was later invaded by Alexander the Great in 4th century B.C.

Later in 1552, the Ottoman Emperor, Kanuni S├╝leyman captured the city and changed the name to "Marmaris".

Marmaris has transformed tremendously from once being a small Turkish fishing town to a popular tourist destination thanks to its natural harbours with calm, crystal clear waters facilitating the development of splendid yachting and diving resorts and the picturesque coastline with rugged mountains and pine trees.

The area around the harbour offers a taste of character of the old town, overlooked by the ancient castle, which is now a museum. The Netsel marina is reached by a small footbridge, and is one of the largest and most modern in Turkey, the hangout of the jetset, who moor their luxury yachts here.

Other interesting sites to see are the biblical city of Efes and Pamukkale (a natural formation of rocks and thermal pools and considered as the 8th wonder of the world).

Marmaris has some of the most attractive beaches in the Aegean region of the East Mediterranean. Marmaris is also a shopping Mecca. The small shopping centre houses up market boutiques and intimate restaurants, however the real bargains are to be found in the bazaar area, with hundreds of small shops offering the usual Turkish wares - clothing, leather, jewellery and handcrafts.

Lined with palms, the seafront promenade has a typical Mediterranean feel and is a great place for an evening meal or leisurely stroll. Shops, bars and restaurants line the streets, each offering something more attractive than the last.
